Title of Work: Bumbling Bedlam in Central Park
(Movement 1: The Awakening; Movement 2: The Pollinating)
Instrumentation: Solo Flute
Difficulty: Grade 8+/Diploma
Duration: c. 3-5′
Cat. No.: NH001
Bumbling Bedlam in Central Park is an amusing, bubbly and stimulating work that depicts the daily task of a working bumblebee. This includes impulsive flourishes and the use of voice in the first movement (The Awakening) conveying a ‘bee-like’ sound, and a more rhythmic and energising second movement (The Pollinating).
Working in Central Park, or in any public place for that matter, can be tough for a bumblebee. With people constantly exercising, socialising, and vacationing all day, it doesn’t go unnoticed, especially for this bee, as he painfully drops into a spot of trouble at the end of The Pollinating. Was it a couple at a romantic picnic protecting their food? Or did a bicycle simply run him over? I’ll let you decide.
First performance: 30th April 2013 at the Cardiff University School of Music.
